Slow Hands

Fall is officially here. It was barely over 50 today for the high. Cold, but enjoying the nice break from the heat wave of summer! So I got the urge to go thrifting today and got 3 good finds! I bought a pair of green jeans. Yes, it was a first. For some reason I decided they worked. So I bought them, along with a cute pencil skirt and a striped hooded top. Good, good finds. What shall I do with GREEN skinny jeans, you ask? Well, here are a few things I came up with off the top of my head...

Top, LOFT; Green skinny jeans, Madewell
Why I think it works: Basic black and white striped aren't boring, but they don't make the skinny jeans overwhelming either. It's good to stick to either neutral colors mixed with only a few brights, or a basic pattern. Otherwise you run the risk of making the pants look tacky, like that weird flourescent jeans phase that took the tween world by storm a few seasons back. Yes, I had one pair. No, I did not wear them more than once.

Top, Abercrombie; Jeans, Madewell, Boots, Kmart kid's section
Why I think it works: Neutral hoodies can be boring and high school, but these jeans give it some kick. Good outfit for a lazy casual day that still looks "different".

Denim jacket, Banana Republic; Jeans, Madewell, Top, Merona, boots, Kmart; gloves, Bijuju
Why I think it works: This outfit gives off a more "tough-girl" vibe. The denim jacket breaks up the color palette of brown/green neutral but still keeps it pretty basic. It gives the outfit more of a worn-in look, but isn't too matchy-matchy. You really don't want things to look TOO perfect when wearing jeans in this color; otherwise you'll look like you bought it off a trendy mannequin.

Cardigan, Simply Vera Vera Wang; Top, Merona; Jeans, Madewell; scarf, Mom's closet
Why I think it works: This outfit is my favorite so far. The brown and green palette is spiced up with a bright rust cardigan and a rusty-yellow blend fuzzy scarf. The mix of color and texture is creative and bohemian, yet not overwhelming. The pastel color of the jeans makes them much more flattering and wearable. The babydoll top under the cardigan makes the look easy and comfortable, but still intentional. I'd wear this out and about on a Friday night, running errands, or going to class. It's versatile and unique! I love these pants - they prove that it takes someone with a little fashion sense to pull them off.

What do YOU think about green pants?

Make Me Feel Something

Chunky knits + stripes
Cardigan, Mossimo; Striped Dolman Tee, Max&Miley; Black Tee, Mossimo; Jeans, F21; Boots, Steve by Steve Madden; hair and makeup my own

I was in a clothing rut today. I have so many clothes, but sometimes I still feel like I have nothing to wear - oh to be a girl! Anyways, tonight's look was inspired by the first two things I grabbed out of my drawer and winter clothes bag. The chunky cable-knit cardigan is warm and comfy, while the striped tee adds a little edge. The black leather biker boots give the outfit a tough vibe, which balances out of the cozy knit sweater. Worn together, it's something vaguely reminiscent of Rag & Bone meets Alison Mosshart. Or something like that. First time wearing stripes and chunk knits together - I like! :)

Leaving Trails

This photo of Mary Kate Olsen appeared in a fashion magazine a few years ago, and every once in a while I think about it. Here's the thing: I used to hate faux leather/lamé leggings, but she makes them look so chic! I tried on a pair once and I couldn't decide if they were for me or not. But I think I've decided that this is a look I need to try this fall. What I like about Mary Kate's look here is that she mixes the edgy leggings with a casual top and interesting shoes:

So here is my pick for a cute, easy outfit using faux leather leggings, a la Forever 21. Each one of these pieces has a nice price point and could be easily incorporated into your fall wardrobe, as well as make this style wearable.

Suedette Cutout Heels - $26.80
Thermal Knit Tunic - $15.80
Relaxed Waterfall Vest in Olive - $24.80
Edgy Sparkle Leggings - $14.80
I like the idea of pairing these leggings with some really amazing heels and either a knit tunic or a knit vest. The contrast between the two fabrics helps keep the leggings from looking like "too much". Wearing a tight fitting top layer would take the look from cutting-edge to trashy realllllly fast. So play with your proportions - tight on the bottom, big on top, and add some statement shoes. I'm going to go to the store and see if I can grab these. I'll post pics when I get some :)

All Summer In A Day

At least, that's what it feels like to me. This is my last full week of summer - EVER. I'll be a Senior next Wednesday, and then after graduation, it's off to the real world of marriage and 9-5 jobs. Kind of exciting though:)

This week was unexpectedly full of fun surprises. The best was discovering a pair of authentic Seven For All Mankind A-Pocket flares at Goodwill. I almost peed myself :P The jeans are not in my size and a bit big on me (no need to unzip to get these guys off, haha). But honestly, it doesn't matter what size they could have been, I still would have bought them. I mean you seriously can't pass up $189 jeans for $3.39. Basically made my day. I assured my fiance, who was with me, that I was amazing for finding them. Clearly the importance was lost on him, but I told him if he were a girl he'd want to be my bff :) So yeah, good day for sure.

Jeans, Seven For All Mankind; Tank top, Old Navy; Black Bow Heels, Red Camel; Tie-Dye tee, from Forever 21, tie-dyed by me

Last week I got this adorable handkerchief tank from TJ Maxx for $7. I've only worn it once, but I think it's comfy and has a lot of possibilities (none of which I made use of for this picture, haha)
Cheers!

Fall Shopping on a Budget

Fall is almost here! Well, in a few weeks anyways. But now is the time to start to ready your wardrobe to transition to cooler temperatures. Now I love a pretty sundress as much as anyone, but I'm SO ready for my fall clothes! They're always so cozy and fun. So, in the spirit of fall, here are some tips to help you maximize your wardrobe, look chic, and NOT break the bank. Enjoy!

Layer, Layer, LAYER
This is an old trick that's gained popularity through several seasons now, but it's one of the best. Get more mileage out of your spring and summer pieces by creating layers with your fall pieces. So put your tanks under long-sleeved tops, wear tunics over sweaters and vice versa. Don't forget that some of your summer dresses can work great for fall just by adding leggings, boots, and a cute cardigan. Take this autumn printed skirt by Boden ($78, www.bodenusa.com): Combined with black leggings, brown boots, a tee and a cardigan, it's a whole new wintry look to love :)

Denim Leggings 101
Although this trend might sound intimidating, it doesn't have to be. Denim leggings (or jeggings) are nearly everywhere right now, but the key is finding the right brand for your body. I highly recommend investing in a pair for fall - follow these tips:
1. Don't buy cheap jeggings, tempting as it may be. Keep in mind that jeggings without back pockets will emphasize larger bums in a bad way, and they tend to look unfinished and cheap on everybody (unless of course you're wearing long tunics that cover the back regardless). So opt for a pair with either faux or functional back pockets.
2. DO try to find ones with faux front pockets, as they keep you from having fabric bulges on the front of your thighs. Try to find dark to medium-dark rinses as they are the most slimming and versatile.
3. Pay attention to the way the fabric feels: is is too thin? Does it look cheap? Will it hold up through more than one season? Is it comfortable on your body?
4. Make sure you're 100% comfortable with the way you look and feel before your purchase; with denim leggings everywhere, there IS a pair for you - so no need to rush! Take your time to find your jegging soulmate.

Some good picks...

Ann Taylor Loft Denim Leggings in Rinse (www.anntaylorloft.com) $69.50
AE Jeggings in Dark Indigo (www.ae.com) $34.50

Neutrals Will Never Fail You
Spending your money on neutral pieces will help you get more use out of them. Buying neutral cardigans, leggings, boots, and jackets will enable greater mixing and matching and provide wearability for many years to come. So instead of splurging on trend-of-the-moment, colored pieces only, invest in some quality neutrals first. Buying a big neutral cardigan will save your life through fall and winter - you can throw it over a cute dress and boots for a date, or wear it with jeans and flats for running errands. Here's one I love from Forever 21 - a steal at just $13.50, available in black, gray, white, and heather gray - all excellent neutrals!

Accessorize!
The cheapest way to update your fall wardrobe is to add accessories. Maybe you already have plenty of fall pieces, or maybe you're just not interested in spending tons of money right now, but either way, buying some new accessories can really add a lot to your look. Stores like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe stock lots of luxe accessories for $4-$10. With just $32 (excluding tax), you could purchase 8 pairs of earrings from Forever 21! So next time you're low on cash, buy some funky hoops, an interesting bangle, or a cocktail ring. You're guaranteed t get noticed for only a little pocket change.

Hippie Hoop Earrings (www.forever21.com) $3.80
Shop Your Closet
Perhaps the best thing to do before fall is to shop your own closet. Often you will find old pieces tucked away from a few seasons ago that have come back in style, or could be altered to create a whole new look! Just last week I discovered a souvenir from the Galapagos Islands that my Aunt brought me years ago - now I see it as a cool woven tote that NO one else will have! Also look for old pieces you could cut up to make scarves or belts. And an added bonus: if you find things you no longer want or need, you can donate them to a thrift store and help provide support for those in need while simultaneously cleaning your closet! That's something everyone should try to do.

I hope everyone (whoever you are!) is looking forward to fall as much as I am. Now back to the reality of a heat index of 105 today...:(

Hippie Hill

Tie-dye + fringe
Fringe t-shirt: Mossimo (tie-dyed by my Mom, fringed by moi), Denim cut-offs: Mossimo Supply Co., Headband: vintage, make-up: moi

I saw a fringe vest at work a few days ago and decided I needed to try my hand. First attempt was pretty good - I took an old tie-dyed t-shirt and cut it up :) Next project is to fringe a sweater. Yes, fringe is now a verb.

Ebenezer

I went through old photos today. Then I found my Mom's old horsehead ring, which I am officially stealing. This look is inspired by my Mom's horse, Ebenezer, who we sadly don't have with us anymore. It takes a free spirit to express yourself, and that's something both my Mom and Ebby have always had.

Acid Wash Denim leggings, BDG; T-shirt, Designed by cousin for a special event; Teal Suede Oxfords, BDG; Horse ring, vintage stolen from Mom; Spiral Stone Earrings, stolen from Mom

Little Spiders

New favorite nail color from Sally Hansen: Pacific Blue. It looks like a purple/blue hybrid and I plan on living in it this summer. It's $2.99 and goes on vibrant in one coat - highly recommend!

Today I'm listening to Dr. Dog - Heart It Races. You probably should too. I wish I was at Bonnaroo. That's my rhyme for today. :)

Shopping with Lana.

Ok. I really need these denim leggings from Free People. I am really loving this denim legging trend - they're everywhere if you haven't noticed. Some designers do it right - thick denim, faux pockets/back pockets, sturdy yet soft wasitband. Others just looks cheap and gross. But if you're looking for a truly comfy, chic pair of leggings, try these. I tried them on at Belk's last week and I was in love. If it wasn't for my bet with my Dad I'd definitely be setting money aside for these. At $68 they're fairly reasonable. They even work for dressy looks because they're nice and dark! I hope they still have them by November...or else I'm losing a bet :P

Can we please take a moment to discuss how gorgeous this tunic is?! I've been on the Free People site a lot now. It's on sale for $70, which is not in my budget right now. So I'm going to keep my eyes peeled for a cheaper version. But I love the thought of a big floral tunic. I am obsessed with floral dresses, but tunics I have not :( How cute would this look with skinny jeans or leggings (denim leggings...) and a pair of boots? Or with BF shorts and gladiators?
Oh Forever 21,how I love you. These shoes just showed up on the website. I like :) They're so different! I like the antique Japanese vibe. I bet these shoes would get a lot of compliments. And what a way to glam up an LBD! At $25.80 they're a steal. Wonder if they're comfy.

These Are Hard Times To Fall In Love

Work clothes suck. Here's a fun number that I enjoyed putting together. I've had that hat for years and been waiting to put it to use.

Skirt, American Eagle; Socks&Heels, Merona/Mossimo; T-shirt, Altru (Urban Outfitters); Cardigan, Simply Vera Vera Wang; Hat, thrifted

Yay socks + heels. I'm branching out. Today I even tried on my old flares and thought they might be cute again - after years of skinny jeans only. What's gotten into me?!

*Currently wanting Free People's denim leggings, but unable to get them because I made a bet with my Dad that I could last 6 months without buying jeans. If I fail I owe him $50. That was such a bad idea.

Odessa

Last night I got crafty. While watching about 5 hours of Grey's Anatomy season 2 on my day off (I know...sad day), I decided to make my oversized tie-dye t-shirt more awesome. Mom tie-dyed it for me when I was a freshman in college and I love the colors. After seeing a girl with a cut-out tee last week, I decided this shirt needed a makeover...
And here's the new headband I made out of the collar!

I ruched the flap of shirt still hanging down and sewed it up onto the collar. Then I made three "flowers" out of scraps of rainbow fabric squares. So viola: a tie-dyed, floral headband! I think it looks really cute:)

P.S. I'm super excited about the fashion sketching book I bought. After I get my proportions right, look for some drawings! :P

Yellow Iris

Yesterday I sat outside and read for over two hours, and it was lovely. I had to be at school all day for graduation practice and Baccalaureate rehearsals since I was marshaling. Now that I'm out for the summer, I actually have time to read books I want to read, so I went to the library this week and rekindled an old love - Agatha Christie novels and short stories. Yesterday I read short stories in a pretty sundress and I felt marvelous.

Dress: Sugar Lips; Shoes: Chinese Laundry; Cross-body bag: Target
Reading murder mysteries never gets old. Favorite genre :)

P.S. I got an adorable top from Free People on sale today (Belk), some cute khaki shorts for like $6.50, nail polish, and faux pearl earrings (Forever 21). So excited about those! I also found Guess khaki pants last night at a thrift store for $1. I mean, how much cheaper can you get? Why am I on a khaki craze? Gotta wear it for alumnae weekend...

Sun Hands

I went thrifting at a new store last week. This is what I found:

Purple print dress: J.Crew; Green Print dress: American Eagle

Needless to say I was extremely excited. I got the J. Crew dress for $5 and the American Eagle dress for $1. Some of the best deals I've ever gotten - which is saying a lot! So, I think I found a new place. They have everything from dresses to jeans to home furnishings. I envision many trips over there after my internship this summer (it's right down the street).

Today's outing was to Urban Outfitters with my bro. I'm on a budget (YUCK! But thanks to encouragement from my fiancĂ©...) so I ended up not getting any clothes. But I found this awesome nail polish for 99¢ each! & they're colors I don't have yet. I'm on the green trend, apparently.

This looks like a granny smith apple.
This other shade looks like pretty green clay.

'Tis all! :)

The Trees Grew Emotions and Died

Cute. Comfy. On sale.

Boots: Rebels
Jeans: Almost Famous

I wore these all day and hardly took them off. LOVE. I have to break most boots in, but these are good to go and so soft. I watched them at work until they went down to final clearance and I felt obligated to buy them. I want to wear them with a sundress this week since it's in the 70's - not exactly shorts weather for a cold-natured person like me!

Patiently waiting on my shipment from Urban. Ok, not patiently, but I'm waiting. Counting down the days til I get Stella back...hurry up Wednesday! I miss my car:(

P.S. Go listen to Cold Cave & chill out.

"It was the smell of glamour"

Yesterday I went thrifting...and I got the most amazing vintage dress!

Dress, thrifted; Pearls, Mom's; Cardigan, SO...; kitten heels (that you can't see in these pics), Target.

I've been going back to my childhood lately - I've been attracted to everything in purple! This dress is some really old off-brand of Casual Corner. I went to Goodwill to get a maxi skirt, but this caught my eye. I love the little purple flowers and the sheath cut. It's a little big, which is nice because it's super soft and comfy:)I also picked up a really cute asymmetrical peasant skirt, but I'll save that for later. My stuff from Urban Outfitters should be coming this week too so I'm super excited to post pictures of that! I love that store.
